Church of Blessed Mary MacKillop

Balclutha - New Zealand

The School People.

We are a small Catholic school sharing the grounds of the Blessed Mary MacKillop Church. We have 3 classrooms educating boys and girls from the age of 5 to 13.
As a Catholic school we promote the values of respect, understanding and co-operation. Teachers and older children model these values and our reward systems support our children in making the right choices. Once a week whole school prayer focuses on these and related values to explicitly remind children of the path Jesus walked.
We follow the New Zealand curriculum but as an integrated school we also teach Religious Education throughout. Our approach builds year on year as the children grow through the school and we are very well supported by the Dunedin Diocese.
We have a close relationship with our parish priest, Fr Michael Hishon and liaise with the parish to ensure our families are included in the Sacramental programmes. The school has a Catholic principal and a Director of Religious Studies who work together to keep the parish and school working in harmony.

Mrs Annie Nelson (left) is the School Principal. She joined us in April 2010 from Auckland. Annie is a passionate leader who believes all children can achieve their potential.

Mrs Lauren Keighley (right) is the teacher in Room 1. She is also the Deputy Principal. Mrs Keighley provides a welcoming, fun and productive start to the educational life of the children at St. Joseph’s.

Miriam Chamberlain (left) is our Director of Religious Studies. Ms Chamberlain teaches the years 3 to 5 in Room 2. Ms Chamberlain is a very talented singer who shares her skills with the school. She works very hard for her children but always makes time to share a laugh.

Mrs Jill Dempster (left) is our Teacher Aide. She works with Mrs Keighley and Ms Chamberlain. She likes running which is great as she often does a lot of running after the teachers!

Mrs Margaret Heaps is our school cleaner. She makes sure that we always have a clean and tidy school to share. She is also a very talented gardener and has made our school look very beautiful.

Mrs Hazal Dowling is our new Office Manager but she has been a volunteer at the school for many years! There isn’t much she doesn’t know about the school. Hazal will be the first friendly face you see when you visit St. Joseph’s.

Please feel free to come and visit the school.
